Cerumen impaction (ear wax buildup)


Description

Too much wax in the ear that blocks the ear canal. Earwax (cerumen) is part of the body's natural defenses and it protects the ear canal by trapping dirt and slowing the growth of bacteria. When too much wax forms pain and other symptoms can occur.

Symptoms

Ear pain, decreased hearing, ringing in the ears, dizziness, vertigo.

A history and physical exam will be performed.

Treatment

Removal of the wax with a wax softener and irrigation or by the doctor using a thin instrument placed in the ear.
