Description
Fungal infection of the skin. It can occur in any area of the skin, scalp or involve the nails.
Symptoms
Itchy, red, raised, and scaly patches (often with sharply defined borders). The patches may blister and ooze. The skin in the center of the patch may appear normal giving a ring appearance. If hair is involved there may be bald patches. Nail involvement makes nails discolored, brittle and thick.

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Many times no other tests are needed. Occasionally examination of the skin with an ultra-violet light (Wood's lamp) and/or skin scrapings examined under a microscope will be done to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment
Treatment may include: over-the-counter antifungal creams or lotions (such as miconazole or clotrimazole) or prescription antifungal drugs taken orally and/or applied topically to the affected areas.
