Chalazion


Description

A swelling of the eyelid caused by a swollen oil gland. It can be the after-effect of a sty.

Symptoms

It may start with eye discomfort and redness for a few days. Eventually, the chalazion becomes a painless, round swelling of the eyelid.

Workup:
A history and physical will be performed. The diagnosis can usually be made with a history and eyelid exam without additional tests.

Treatment

Warm compresses are often the only treatment necessary. If there is an associated infection, the provider may prescribe oral antibiotics. If the chalazion does not go way after six weeks, you may be referred to an eye surgeon for surgical removal.
