Cervical lymphadenopathy (enlarged neck lymph nodes)


Description

Enlarged lymph nodes near the neck. The enlarged lymph nodes can result from infection, tumor or inflammation.

Symptoms

Lumps in neck, pain, redness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing.

Tests

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests will be performed to identify an infection (such as mononucleosis) that may be causing the enlarged lymph nodes. A CT scan and/or MRI may be performed to further evaluate the lymph node enlargement and surrounding structures. Biopsy is considered for rapidly enlarging lymph nodes or persistently abnormal nodes.

Complete blood count (CBC)

Other Specific Tests: Rapid strep test, Mono spot, biopsy

Treatment

Depends on the cause of the lymph node enlargement but may include: antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), corticosteroids, acetaminophen (Tylenol), or surgery. If due to cancer, surgery, radiation, and/or chemotherapy may be recommended.
