Developmental delay


Description

Developmental delay occurs when a child does not meet their expected developmental milestones. These milestones refer to motor function, brain function and social skills. There are a variety of causes of developmental delay including prematurity, infections and genetic causes.

Symptoms

Symptoms include delayed motor and cognitive (brain) skills. Parents often remark that their child seems "slow" or "behind".

Tests

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A complete history and physical will be performed. Blood tests may be ordered. Standardized screening tools may also be used.

Tests:
Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)

Other Specific Tests: lead screen, genetic testing

Specialists:
Pediatrics, Pediatric and Adolescent Psychiatry, Occupational Medicine, Clinical Genetics

Treatment

Treatment is varied but may include behavioral interventions, speech and occupational therapy, family counseling or educational assistance. Medications may also be prescribed.
