Description
A foreign object in the eye is usually in the conjunctival sac under the upper or lower lids, or adhered to the cornea. If the foreign body travels deeper into the eye and enters the globe serious eye damage and loss of vision can result.
Symptoms
Pain, tearing, irritation, eye redness, visual disturbance, eye discharge. If the cornea is injured, pain may be worst when blinking.

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment
Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. A special microscope called a slit lamp may be used to evaluate the eye. An X-ray or CT scan may be recommended to locate the foreign body.

Treatment
Removal of the foreign body, topical anesthetic and antibiotics, and possible patching of the eye. Sometimes, flushing the eye with sterile solution will remove the foreign body without difficulty.
