Inflammatory conditions

Description

Complex biological response of tissues to harmful stimuli, such as bacteria, viruses damaged cells, or irritants. It is a protective attempt by the body to remove the offending stimuli as well as start the healing process. Inflammatory conditions also include autoimmune diseases that represent a "misfiring" or abnormal regulation of the body's immune system causing it to attack its host.

Symptoms

Depends on the cause of the inflammatory condition. Fever, redness and warmth over the inflamed area, fatigue, pain, swelling, joint pain, rash.

Tests

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Lab tests to detect the cause of the inflammatory condition may be done.

Tests:
Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP)

Other Specific Tests: ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate), ANA (Antinuclear antibody), rheumatoid factor

Treatment

Treatment depends on the cause of the inflammatory condition but may include: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), acetaminophen (Tylenol), immunomodulators, and/or steroids. If the inflammatory condition is triggered by an infection, anti-microbial medication may be recommended.
