Magic mushroom ingestion (psilocybin)


Description

The ingestion of mushrooms containing psilocybine. Psilocybine causes hallucinations about 30 minutes after an oral ingestion. The intensity and duration of symptoms from psilocybine mushroom ingestion are highly variable, depending on species, dosage, individual physiology, and setting.

Symptoms

Hallucinations, incoordination, agitation, nausea, large pupils, and a rapid heart rate.

Tests

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests may be done to rule out any other causes of the strange behavior.

Tests:
Pregnancy (BHCG) test, Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), CT Scan

Other Specific Tests: Urine or serum toxicology screen

Treatment

The patient is protected from harming themselves. Intravenous sedation may be needed.
