Description
Abdominal pain that occurs at the time of ovulation. The pain results from irritation of the abdominal cavity secondary to bleeding from the ovulation site. About 20% of women experience Mittelschmerz. The presence of the symptoms does not signify any structural disease.
Symptoms
Lower-abdominal pain usually located on one side, recurrent pain that recurs during the same time in the menstrual cycle, the pain may switch sides from month to month.

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. An ultrasound may be done to rule out other causes of the pain.

Treatment
No treatment is usually necessary. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn or Aleve) and/or acetaminophen (Tylenol), may be used to help relieve pain.
