Metastatic neoplasm (cancer spread)

Description

A cancerous growth that arises in a place beyond the original site of the cancer. The original cancer is called the primary tumor and the sites of metastasis are named secondary tumors. The cancer cells of the metastatic tumors have exactly the same appearance as the primary tumor. Metastatic cancers cells can spread by traveling through the blood stream, by using the lymph channels, or by spreading within the abdominal cavity.

Symptoms

Depends on the site of the metastasis.

Tests

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests include: CT or MRI scan to identify the metastasis. A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan can also be done and may be more accurate in detecting small metastases.

Tests:
CT Scan, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

Other Specific Tests: Positron Emission Tomagraphy (PET) scan

Specialists:
Cancer Care (oncology), Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Surgical Oncology

Treatment

Depends on the cell type of the metastasis and the location of the metastasis but may include: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and/or surgery.
