Urinary tract malformation


Description

There are a many different types of urinary tract malformations. The great majority are congenital, and are diagnosed when the patients is still young. Some occur after surgery or after instrumentation of the ureter.

Symptoms

Painful urination, frequent urination, recurrent urinary tract infections.

Tests

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests, such as ultrasound and/or CT scan, will be done to establish the diagnosis.

Tests:
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), Urinalysis (UA), Ultrasound

Other Specific Tests: Cyclic voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG), Diuretic nuclear renography, Intravenous pyelogram (IVP), urine culture

Treatment

The specific treatment depends on the type and severity of the malformation. It may require surgical repair.
