Presbyopia (aging vision)


Description

Presbyopia is the difficulty focusing on objects that are close due to a hardening of the lens in the eye. The lens naturally begins to harden as we age. This hardening begins earlier in life and usually progresses slowly. Symptoms most often begin around age forty.

Symptoms include difficulty seeing objects that are close, headaches and eye fatigue.

A history and physical will be performed. A specific ophthalmologic exam and visual testing will be performed.

Treatment

Treatment usually consists of prescribing glasses or contacts to correct the vision problems. Over-the-counter readers may be effective for some individuals.
