Poisoning


Description

Swallowing, injecting, breathing in, or otherwise being exposed to a harmful substance. Most poisonings occur by accident, but others are intentional. The symptoms can vary widely ranging from nausea and vomiting to seizures and death.

Symptoms

Symptoms vary according to the poison, but may include: Weakness, seizure, abdominal pain, vomiting, bluish lips, chest pain, confusion, cough, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, dizziness, double vision, drowsiness, fever, headache, heart palpitations, irritability, loss of appetite, loss of bladder control, muscle twitching, numbness or tingling, shortness of breath, stupor, unconsciousness, unusual breath odor, weakness.

Tests

Common tests used for diagnosis and treatment

Workup:
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests depend on the suspected poisoning but may include: aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), and urine and serum toxicology screen.

Tests:
Pregnancy (BHCG) test, Complete blood count (CBC), Comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP), Electrocardiogram (EKG)

Other Specific Tests: Aspirin level, acetaminophen (Tylenol) level, urine and serum toxicology screen

Treatment

Treatment depends on the poison and the severity of the symptoms.
